Bhaktirasamrita-sindhu, Eastern Division, 2nd Wave, Verses 22-23 (Tape 14)
HH Shri Satyanarayana Dasa Babaji Maharaja
Part 1:
Rupa Gosvami says that unless and until one becomes completely free from all other desires except the desire for devotion, devotion or bhakti will not become manifest in the heart. Because bhakti is not already there in the heart, it has to come there by the grace of Shri Krishna or His devotee. But if one is already full of desires, then how it will come? You have a cup and you want something in it, then you have to first empty it. If it is already full, then how can you take anything in that? Adhikari - a person who is eligible - is also called patra in Sanskrit. Patra literally means a pot and maybe the English word pot is derived from the Sanskrit word patra. Patra means someone who can hold or contain something, like a container. That means he has to have some qualification. For example, if you want to fill in some acid then you have to use a glass container, otherwise if you put it in a plastic container the acid will be eat it away. Similarly, for bhakti to hold there has to be a proper container. That proper container is that which does not have any other desire.
