Willkommen im Forum

Liebe Besucher,
Liebe Devotees,

Euer Vedanta

Life is unfair

The following conversation from the Mahabharata takes place between Shri Krishna and Karna. According to Babaji Maharaja, Karna is actually one of the most tragic personalities in Mahabharata. He is the unfortunate, secret half-brother of the Pandavas, who, unfortunately, they will get to know through their mother Kunti only at the very end.

As an unmarried girl, Kunti once earned the favor of mysticist Durvasa Muni when he was her guest and she diligently served and cooked for him. As a farewell, he gave her a magic mantra with which she could summon any demigod. At some point, from pure curiosity, Kunti wanted to try the mantra. So she called Suryadeva, the sun god. He then promptly appeared before her. Kunti was joyfully frightened at his darshan, and then wanted to send him back at once. Suryadeva, however, would not leave her so easily. After all, he would not have come in vain, and thus he spontaneously decided to conceive a child with her. Before that, however, he promised to restore her virginity afterwards, so that later, she would not have any social difficulties regarding marriage. As a consequence of this pregnancy, Karna was born, and for fear and shame Kunti secretly put him in a basket in the river, where he was later found and raised by a simple couple.

Karna was already very noble because of his ancestry and was destined to become world-famous for his incredible charity. Every day he gave many pounds (!) of gold to the poor, i.e. teachers and sadhus. And yet Karna time and again had bad luck in life. Thus he also fought in Kurukshetra on exactly the wrong side, namely that of Duryodhana, and thus against Shri Krishna and the Pandavas. All this is expressed in more detail in the following dialogue. Shri Krishna's reply to Karna's lamentation i find both brilliant and humorous. It surely can be a great consolation, especially when life once again totally thwarts our dearmost plans and aspirations.

So finally, here is the scene from Mahabharata, which apparently took place before the Great War in Kurukshetra. Great thanks to Purushottama ji, who has kindly provided us the following text!

Karna bitterly complains  towards Shri Krishna:

My mother left me the moment I was born. Is it my fault I was born an illegitimate child?
I did not get education from Dronacharya because I was considered a non-kshatriya.
Parashurama taught me but then gave me the curse to forget everything since I was a kshatriya.
A cow was accidentally hit by my arrow and its owner cursed me for no fault of mine.
I was disgraced in Draupadi's svayamvar.
Even Kunti finally told me the truth only to save her other sons.
Whatever I received was through Duryodhana's charity. So how am I wrong in taking his side?

Shri Krishna's reply:

Karna, I was born in jail.
Death was waiting for me even before my birth.
The night I was born, I was separated from my birth parents.
From childhood you grew up hearing the sounding of swords, chariots, horses, bow and arrows. I got only cow herd's shed, dung and multiple attempts on my life even before I could walk! No army, no education.

I could hear people saying
I am the reason for all their problems!

When all of you were being appreciated for your valour by your teachers, I had not even received any education. I joined gurukula of Sandipani Rishi only at the age of 16!
You are married to a girl of your choice.
I didn't get the girl I loved and rather ended up marrying those who wanted me or the ones I rescued from demons.
I had to move my whole community from the banks of Yamuna to far off sea shore, to save them from Jarasandha. I was called a coward for running away.
If Duryodhana wins the war you will get lot of credit.
What do I get if Dharmaraja wins the war? Only the blame for the war and all related problems.

Remember one thing Karna:
Everybody has challenges in life.
Life is not fair on anybody.

Duryodhana also has a lot of unfairness in life and so has Yudhishthira. But what is right (Dharma) is known to your mind [your conscience].

No matter how much unfairness we got,
how many times we were disgraced,
how many times we were denied what was due to us:
What is important is, how you reacted at that time.

Stop whining Karna!
Life's unfairness does not give you a license to walk the wrong path of unrighteousness.
