Nitya-karma: Daily Duties for All
HH Shri Satyanarayana Dasa Babaji Maharaja
From a class on Bhaktirasamrita-sindhu (Tape 11):
ya esham purusham sakshad atma-prabhavam ishvaram
na bhajanty avajananti sthanad bhrashtah patanty adhah
If any of the members of the four varṇas (brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra) and four ashramas (brahmacari, grihasta, vanaprastha, sannyasa) fail to worship, if they thus disrespect Shri Bhagavan, Who is the source of their own creation, they will fall down from their position.
Shri Bhagavata Purana 11.5.3
Everybody who has taken birth as a human being, it is his or her duty to perform bhakti. This is the nitya karma for all. Nitya-karma means if you don‘t do it, you incur sin.
If you live in a state, you have certain duties to follow. You enjoy certain benefits by living in a state and you also have to observe certain rules. If you do not observe those rules then you will be punished. On the other hand, if you observe them, you will not get any award. But if you don‘t observe them you will be put into jail, you will be prosecuted. Those are the duties you have to observe.
Similarly, because Shri Bhagavan is our source, He is the source of creation, He is the fountainhead of everyone, it is everybody‘s duty to worship Him. If one does not do that, then one will get punished. And punishment here means degradation. Punishment means restriction of freedom and infliction of certain miseries. You are put into jail which means, your freedom is restricted. You cannot freely walk, talk or execute certain activities. And you may also suffer there due to the circumstances.
The same thing happens if someone is born as a human being. Human beings have certain facilities. They have intelligence, they have hands to work, they have legs to walk they can talk... so many facilities and freedom are given to the human species of life. But if they don‘t worship Shri Bhagavan, Who has given this freedom to them, then what will happen? The freedom will be taken away, you will be put into jail. Then you can become a cat or dog or some plant – you loose your freedom and get punished in this way.
This is the meaning of "falling down"
You don‘t fall down from one planet to another planet. You can remain in the same place. You can probably be born in the same house also, as a fly or mosquito. And you can still feel "it‘s my house!" [laughter in the audience]. But the owner can kill you. So if you do not worship, that is disrespect of Shri Bhagavan.
